City of Eatonton


Eatonton, the county seat for Putnam County, was incorporated December 12, 1809. The city was named for diplomat and general, William Eaton of Connecticut. During the civil war, the city served as a haven for wounded soldiers.

Putnam County's courthouse in Putnam County was constructed between 1905 and 1906 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For a glimpse of historic Eatonton, a Walking Tour of Homes annually showcases the early architecture of the city's first churches, homes, and taverns.
